Master the Curriculum

For parents

Home learning, without the teacher speak

Ten minutes at the kitchen table, matched to what your child’s class is actually doing this term. Answers on the back. Nothing to print if you would rather not.

What year is your child in?

Autumn term in Year 212 weeks · most schools teach it in this order

Your child’s class is learning where the digits sit in a number

In school it will be called “Number: Place Value”. That is the wording on the plan on the classroom wall.

What that actually means

Every digit in a number is worth a different amount depending on where it sits. The 4 in 40 is worth ten times the 4 in 4. That is the whole idea, and almost everything else in maths this year leans on it. This year the numbers go up to 100.

Three things you can do at home tonight, with no printer

  1. 1Say a number out loud and ask which digit is the tens. Swap roles and let them test you, getting one wrong on purpose.
  2. 2Look at the prices on a receipt and ask which is the biggest number, then why. The reason matters more than the answer.
  3. 3Count on in tens from an odd starting number, like 23, 33, 43. Most children can count in tens from zero and stall anywhere else.

Words they might come home with

Digit
One of the ten symbols, 0 to 9, that all numbers are written with.
Partitioning
Splitting a number into parts that add back up, like 46 into 40 and 6.

School words, translated

If any of these turned up in a newsletter or at a parents evening and you nodded politely, here is what they meant.

Small step
One lesson. A block of work is chopped into small steps, taught one a day.
Mastery
Everyone learns the same thing, and nobody moves on until it is understood. It is not a scheme, it is an approach.
Bar model
A drawing of a problem as bars, so the child can see what is known and what is missing before they calculate.
Working towards, working within, greater depth
Three versions of the same sheet: more support, the expected standard, and one that asks them to explain rather than repeat.
Reasoning
Explaining why an answer is right. It is where most of the marks are, and the bit most home practice skips.
Fluency
Being quick and accurate enough that the sum itself is no longer the hard part of the question.
White Rose
The planning scheme most English primaries follow. It is why almost every Year 3 class does fractions at the same time of year.
Objective
The one thing a lesson is meant to teach. It usually starts with "I can".

You do not need to remember how you were taught

Every sheet has the answers on it, and the method is shown rather than assumed. If your child says "that is not how we do it", the sheet will show you how they do it.

Ten minutes beats an hour

Short and often is what works, and it is also what a Tuesday evening allows. Nothing here is designed to take a whole afternoon.
