Where the words come from

These are the statutory word lists from the national curriculum for England, English Appendix 1: the Year 1 common exception words, the days of the week, and the Year 2 common exception words. They are the words a child has to be able to spell by the end of each year, and they are the ones that do not follow the phonics rules, which is why they are learned by looking rather than by sounding out.
