Addition Within 20 Using Objects

This “Addition Within 20” resource is a differentiated and engaging tool designed to help Year 1 pupils develop secure addition skills within 20, in line with the UK National Curriculum objective: “Add and subtract one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20, including zero.” The pack includes three levels of challenge: Working Towards Age-Expected: Features pictorial representations to support pupils who need scaffolding as they add single-digit and two-digit numbers. Working At Age-Expected: Combines numerals with pictures, encouraging children to count on and visualise addition strategies. Working at Greater Depth: Presents incomplete number sentences, requiring children to apply their understanding of number facts and inverse operations. This structured approach supports differentiation in the classroom and builds confidence through visual learning and problem-solving. Ideal for whole-class lessons, group activities, homework, or targeted interventions, with answer sheets included for self-checking or assessment.
