Introduce Year 3 pupils to perimeter with this engaging and practical maths lesson focused on measuring the perimeter of 2-D shapes. Aligned with the National Curriculum, this resource helps children develop a secure understanding of perimeter as the distance around the outside of a closed shape while strengthening their measurement skills. Through hands-on activities, pupils revisit measuring length in centimetres using rulers before applying these skills to calculate the perimeter of a variety of 2-D shapes. Children learn how to measure side lengths accurately, record their measurements and add them together to find the total perimeter. The lesson also encourages the use of known number facts and mental calculation strategies to make perimeter calculations more efficient. As children explore different shapes, they develop an understanding of shape properties and discover how these can help when calculating perimeter. For example, pupils learn that opposite sides of a rectangle are equal and that all sides of a square have the same length, reducing the number of measurements required. The practical activities encourage pupils to draw, measure and investigate shapes independently while building confidence in using rulers accurately and recording measurements correctly. The lesson also addresses common misconceptions, such as confusing perimeter with the space inside a shape or forgetting to include all sides in a calculation. Ideal for whole-class teaching, intervention sessions, independent learning or mastery approaches, this resource provides a clear and engaging introduction to perimeter while developing essential measurement and reasoning skills.
Show lessThe standard small step pack, as her own modules ship it. We do not print page counts here, because her catalogue does not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.
Her own system, with the star count repeated in every worksheet header so a child can be handed the right sheet without a word.
