Designed for the Year 3 Summer Money unit, this practical lesson helps children apply addition skills in real-life money contexts while building fluency with pounds and pence. Using interactive teaching slides and hands-on activities, pupils explore different ways to combine coins to make a given amount before progressing to adding the cost of multiple items. Children are encouraged to choose and apply efficient addition strategies, including known number facts, partitioning and the formal written method, depending on the calculation. As amounts exceed 99p, they learn how to convert pence into pounds and pence, strengthening their understanding of place value and the relationship between the two units. The maths is right and the sequence is sensible. Several of my children needed it enlarged to A3, which is easy enough but worth knowing before you print thirty.
