Working Without Worksheets – Year 1 Fractions: Finding Quarters of Objects and Shapes Take your pupils further in their fractions journey with this Working Without Worksheets lesson for Year 1 Fractions, where children learn to find quarters of objects and shapes. Building on the previous lesson (recognising quarters), this session uses hands-on, practical activities to show that a shape can be divided into four equal parts in more than one way. The lesson begins with a recap starter, including: Identifying shapes that show quarters Practising number bonds for fluency Counting aloud with actions to build sequencing confidence Pupils are then introduced to the practical task: using 2D shapes drawn on sugar paper, they cut out their shapes and experiment with drawing lines to split them into four equal parts. Children explore different ways of finding quarters, for example by cutting vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. Each whole shape is then glued into their maths books, with one example of how it can be split into quarters clearly shown. This process is repeated with different 2D shapes to consolidate learning. The plenary encourages reasoning by asking children to share the different ways they split their shapes and discuss why each one still shows quarters (because all four parts are equal). What’s Included in the Pack? ✔ Full teacher planning with objectives, modelling, and plenary guidance ✔ Starter: recap shapes showing quarters, practise number bonds, counting with actions ✔ Vocabulary focus: quarter, equal, part, whole, share, split, divide ✔ Practical activity: draw and cut out 2D shapes on sugar paper, split into quarters in different ways ✔ Independent recording: glue whole shapes into maths books and show one way to split into quarters ✔ Plenary: reasoning about why different splits can all show quarters ✔ No worksheets—children record directly in their books Why Teachers Love This Resource: ✔ Hands-on, creative approach to finding quarters of shape
Show lessThe standard small step pack, as her own modules ship it. We do not print page counts here, because her catalogue does not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.
Her own system, with the star count repeated in every worksheet header so a child can be handed the right sheet without a word.
