About this resource

This Year 4 Place Value lesson— “Finding 1,000 Less” —develops pupils’ confidence and accuracy when subtracting 1,000 from numbers within 10,000. Building naturally on the previous lesson (finding 1,000 more), children revisit counting backwards in multiples of 1,000 from 10,000, strengthening their understanding of how the thousands digit changes and why we stop at zero before entering negative numbers. The introduction models how to use place value charts and counters to find 1,000 less than numbers such as 6,214, demonstrating clearly that only the thousands digit changes. The teaching also explores trickier cases involving placeholders, including subtracting 1,000 from numbers like 1,007. Children learn that although the thousands counter is removed, the answer becomes simply 7—not “007”—because placeholder zeros are no longer needed once the thousands digit is removed. During the main activity, pupils work with place value charts and counters to represent self-generated four-digit numbers before showing 1,000 less by crossing out a thousands counter. They then extend their learning by generating all possible four-digit combinations from digit cards and finding 1,000 less for each—an excellent challenge for reasoning and fluency. The plenary introduces Rosie’s riddle, requiring children to work backwards from a new number (2,403) to find her original number. This reinforces the idea that sometimes we must add 1,000 rather than subtract it, deepening pupils’ understanding of inverse relationships. Clear misconceptions are provided, including confusion around placeholders, accidentally removing digits other than the thousands, and mistakenly treating the process as dividing by 10. With hands-on modelling, key questions and strong conceptual links, this lesson enables children to confidently and accurately find 1,000 less without relying on inefficient counting strategies.Read more

The standard small step pack, as her own modules ship it. We do not print page counts here, because her catalogue does not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.

Fine, though the font is small for my class.

The maths is right and the sequence is sensible. Several of my children needed it enlarged to A3, which is easy enough but worth knowing before you print thirty.

Printed it at eight on a Sunday and taught it on the Monday.

No editing, no reformatting, no hunting for the answers. The three levels are on separate pages, which sounds obvious until you have used the sites where they are not.

Matches our White Rose planning almost week for week.

I stopped adapting things from three different sites and now start here. The odd week does not line up exactly, but the small step it covers is always somewhere in the same block.
