About this resource

Develop fine motor skills and early maths understanding with this Lunar New Year Themed Fine Motor Lanterns activity , designed especially for Reception and EYFS learners . This hands-on resource helps children strengthen their pincer grip, hand muscles and hand–eye coordination while engaging in a fun, festive task. Each lantern card features ten circles and is intended to be laminated for repeated use , making it ideal for continuous provision. When placed in a tuff tray with pom poms and tweezers , children carefully pick up and position the pom poms onto the matching lantern, encouraging precision, control and concentration . Alongside fine motor development, this activity provides meaningful opportunities to practise colour recognition and counting up to 10 , supporting early maths skills in a practical, play-based way. The tactile nature of the task also promotes independence and perseverance as children complete each lantern.
