This engaging End of Unit Assessment: Manipulate, Compose and Decompose Shapes resource is designed for Early Years learners to assess their understanding of 2D and 3D shapes through practical exploration and discussion. Aligned with White Rose small steps, this assessment supports children in developing spatial reasoning, shape recognition and problem-solving skills. The resource provides a range of carefully structured questions that encourage pupils to manipulate, rotate, combine and break apart shapes. Children are supported to explain their thinking using mathematical vocabulary while working with practical resources such as shape tiles, card cut-outs and construction materials. Assessment activities include: Identifying which shape does not belong and explaining why Rotating shapes to complete pictures Labelling and sequencing shapes to show how they fit together Locating shapes using positional language (e.g. next to, between, below) Composing larger shapes from smaller shapes Decomposing shapes into smaller components Identifying shapes used to create pictures (e.g. a house) Exploring which shapes can be made from two right-angled triangles Recognising 3D shapes, including identifying a cube from its properties The resource places strong emphasis on reasoning and discussion, allowing children to give possible answers and justify their choices. This makes it ideal for adult-supported assessment and observation in Reception classrooms. Slides can be printed and laminated for repeated use, making the resource durable and cost-effective. Small thing, but half the free sheets online expect you to work the answers out yourself. My TA can run a group on this without a briefing first.

“Fine, though the font is small for my class.”
The maths is right and the sequence is sensible. Several of my children needed it enlarged to A3, which is easy enough but worth knowing before you print thirty.
