Support your Upper Key Stage 2 pupils in mastering suffix spelling patterns with this Year 5/6 Spelling Resource Pack, focusing on –ent, –ence, and –ency. Closely aligned with statutory spelling requirements, this resource introduces children to the rule that –ent and its related suffixes are often used after soft c (/s/ sound), soft g (/dʒ/ sound), qu, or when there is a related word with a clear /ɛ/ sound in the right position. Through clear teaching slides, engaging examples, and structured practice, pupils learn to apply this rule accurately in words such as frequent/frequency, innocent/innocence, decent/decency, and confident/confidence. They explore how suffixes change meaning, grammar, and word class, while reinforcing spelling accuracy and vocabulary knowledge. This low-prep resource is flexible enough for whole-class teaching, group activities, or independent practice, making it an invaluable tool for consolidating one of the trickier Year 5/6 spelling rules. What’s Included in the Pack? ✔ Teaching slides explaining the –ent / –ence / –ency rule with clear examples ✔ Word sorting activities to group words by suffix pattern ✔ Error-spotting and correction challenges for spelling accuracy ✔ Sentence-writing and application activities using target vocabulary ✔ Investigations into how suffixes change root words ✔ Answer sheets included for quick marking or self-assessment Why Teachers Love This Pack: ✔ Meets statutory Year 5/6 spelling requirements for suffixes ✔ Differentiated and versatile—suitable for class, group, or individual tasks ✔ Strengthens both spelling and grammar through contextualised practice ✔ Perfect for SPaG starters, homework, interventions, or SATs revision Curriculum Links: This pack supports the Upper Key Stage 2 National Curriculum for English by helping children: ✔ Spell words with the suffixes –ent, –ence, and –ency correctly ✔ Recognise spelling rules based on word sounds and related forms ✔ Apply new vocabulary accurately in their wr

Her own system, with the star count repeated in every worksheet header so a child can be handed the right sheet without a word.

“Good value, and the answers are actually on it.”
Small thing, but half the free sheets online expect you to work the answers out yourself. My TA can run a group on this without a briefing first.

“Fine, though the font is small for my class.”
The maths is right and the sequence is sensible. Several of my children needed it enlarged to A3, which is easy enough but worth knowing before you print thirty.
