Support your Upper Key Stage 2 pupils in mastering one of the trickiest suffix rules with this Year 5/6 Spelling Resource Pack, focusing on words ending in –fer. According to the National Curriculum rule, the “r” is doubled if the –fer is still stressed when a vowel suffix is added, but it is not doubled if the stress has shifted. Through clear teaching slides, engaging examples, and structured practice activities, children will explore this important spelling pattern using key words such as transferring, preferring, referral, reference, referee, and preference. Pupils learn to hear where the stress falls in a word, apply the doubling rule accurately, and build confidence in both spelling and vocabulary. This versatile, low-prep resource can be used for whole-class teaching, small-group interventions, or independent practice, making it an ideal way to consolidate tricky statutory Year 5/6 spelling requirements. What’s Included in the Pack? ✔ Teaching slides explaining the –fer suffix doubling rule with clear examples ✔ Word sorting activities to compare stressed vs unstressed endings ✔ Error-spotting and correction challenges for spelling accuracy ✔ Sentence-writing and application tasks using target words ✔ Word investigations into how stress changes spelling patterns ✔ Answer sheets included for easy marking or pupil self-checking Why Teachers Love This Pack: ✔ Meets statutory Year 5/6 spelling requirements for suffix rules ✔ Differentiated and flexible—perfect for whole-class, group, or individual use ✔ Builds awareness of spelling, grammar, and vocabulary together ✔ Ideal for SPaG starters, interventions, homework, or SATs preparation Curriculum Links: This pack supports the Upper Key Stage 2 National Curriculum for English by helping children: ✔ Apply the –fer doubling rule correctly when adding vowel suffixes ✔ Recognise how stress patterns affect spelling choices ✔ Use new vocabulary confidently in their writing Whether introducing the rule for the first time
Show lessThe standard small step pack, as her own modules ship it. We do not print page counts here, because her catalogue does not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.
Her own system, with the star count repeated in every worksheet header so a child can be handed the right sheet without a word.

“Good value, and the answers are actually on it.”
Small thing, but half the free sheets online expect you to work the answers out yourself. My TA can run a group on this without a briefing first.

“Fine, though the font is small for my class.”
The maths is right and the sequence is sensible. Several of my children needed it enlarged to A3, which is easy enough but worth knowing before you print thirty.
