About this resource

Support your pupils in mastering the -ing suffix with this interactive spelling practice worksheet, specially designed for Year 4 learners. This resource combines visual prompts with structured word formation to strengthen pupils' understanding of spelling rules when adding the -ing suffix to root words. Children are first given a list of root words: jump, begin, limit, garden, forget, and skip . They are then encouraged to cover the words and write the correct -ing form under each corresponding picture. This method supports memory recall, phonological awareness, and spelling accuracy. The activity also introduces an important spelling rule: ‘If the last syllable of a word is stressed and ends in a single consonant preceded by a single vowel, the consonant is doubled before adding the -ing suffix. If the syllable is unstressed, the consonant is not doubled.' Perfect for: Spelling and grammar lessons Revision or practice homework Small group interventions Visual and kinaesthetic learners What’s included: One worksheet with root word prompts, picture cues, and space for spelling practice Answers Clear explanation of the -ing suffix spelling rule Words that demonstrate a mix of single and double consonant endings This resource is ideal for reinforcing National Curriculum expectations and helping children understand when and why we double consonants in -ing words.Read more
