This Year 4 maths lesson plan introduces pupils to Roman numerals, building on prior learning of place value, addition, and subtraction. The lesson begins with a starter activity that revises key place value concepts. Children use whiteboards to answer questions, build the largest and smallest numbers, and identify numbers within a given range. Teachers can use this opportunity to assess pupils’ understanding and prepare them for learning about Roman numerals. During the introduction, pupils explore the Roman numeral system, which originated in Ancient Rome.
