This Year 4 Order Numbers Beyond 1,000 lesson is a carefully structured Spring term maths resource designed to deepen pupils’ understanding of ordering and comparing four-digit numbers. Following a Working Without Worksheets approach, the lesson promotes reasoning, discussion and practical exploration to secure strong place value foundations. Aligned with the National Curriculum objective “Order and compare numbers beyond 1,000” , this lesson builds on prior learning in place value and comparing numbers. Pupils are reminded to begin comparisons with the greatest place value column (thousands) before moving to hundreds, tens and ones where necessary. Through clear modelling and animated teaching slides (to be used in slideshow mode), children develop confidence in explaining how they know which number is greater or smaller. The lesson includes a structured starter revisiting comparison skills, followed by collaborative partner activities where pupils order sets of four-digit numbers from least to greatest. Using practical resources such as base 10 equipment, place value charts and counters, learners physically build numbers to support conceptual understanding. They record their findings and justify their reasoning using accurate mathematical language. A reasoning-based plenary challenges pupils to identify and correct a common misconception when ordering numbers, encouraging deeper thinking and mathematical discussion. Assessment opportunities, key questions and common misconceptions are clearly identified to support effective AfL and mastery learning. This engaging and interactive resource is ideal for Year 4 teachers delivering Spring term place value, helping children confidently order and compare numbers beyond 1,000 through practical, discussion-led learning.

Her own system, with the star count repeated in every worksheet header so a child can be handed the right sheet without a word.
