L4 Count in Multiples of 25

This Year 4 Place Value lesson— “Count in Multiples of 25” —provides a practical, hands-on approach to understanding larger multiples and developing confident mental counting. Building on earlier Autumn Term lessons covering multiples of 6, 7 and 9, pupils revisit known patterns on the hundred square before exploring how multiples of 25 behave differently as numbers grow beyond 100. The lesson introduces counting in 25s through the concept of quarters of 100 , helping children recognise that each 25 represents one quarter, two quarters make 50, and four quarters make 100. Using clear visuals, pupils examine circles divided into quarters to support counting in 25s and identify key patterns, including how multiples of 25 always end in 0 or 5 , and how they relate to multiples of 50 and 100. A creative and engaging activity invites children to “cut” whole pizzas into quarters and label each slice with multiples of 25, reinforcing the idea that each full pizza totals 100, the next 200, the next 300, and so on. This supports deeper links to place value, known number facts and real-world contexts. In the plenary, pupils solve Leanna’s reasoning problem using counting in steps of 25 to determine how long it would take to eat a chocolate bar—discovering that 300 seconds (or 5 minutes) is the total.
