This Year 4 Place Value Representations lesson is an engaging Spring term maths resource designed to strengthen pupils’ understanding of four-digit numbers through a range of visual and practical representations. Following a Working Without Worksheets approach, this lesson promotes discussion, reasoning and conceptual understanding rather than reliance on printed worksheets. Aligned with the National Curriculum expectations for Year 4 place value, the lesson begins with a counting recap in 10s, 100s and 1,000s to reinforce number patterns and prior learning from fractions and place value. Pupils explore pictorial representations of 10, 100 and 1,000 before moving on to identifying the value of digits within four-digit numbers using base 10 equipment. Through guided modelling, children identify the number of thousands, hundreds, tens and ones shown in each representation and determine the number displayed. Emphasis is placed on accurate use of place holders, particularly the importance of zero in maintaining correct place value. Pupils record their answers on whiteboards and complete structured stem sentences to develop mathematical vocabulary and reasoning. In the main activity, learners work independently to interpret sticker-based representations of four-digit numbers, recording the number shown and explaining their thinking. A reasoning-focused plenary challenges pupils to evaluate a misconception, encouraging deeper understanding of how digits represent different values depending on their position. Assessment opportunities, key misconceptions and discussion prompts are embedded throughout to support effective AfL. This resource is ideal for Year 4 teachers seeking a practical and interactive lesson to consolidate understanding of representing and identifying four-digit numbers using base 10 and place value knowledge.

“Fine, though the font is small for my class.”
The maths is right and the sequence is sensible. Several of my children needed it enlarged to A3, which is easy enough but worth knowing before you print thirty.

No editing, no reformatting, no hunting for the answers. The three levels are on separate pages, which sounds obvious until you have used the sites where they are not.
