L6 Solve One-Step Addition and Subtraction Word Problems

This Year 3 maths lesson on one-step addition and subtraction word problems uses a hands-on, interactive approach to help pupils develop problem-solving and reasoning skills. Through acting out stories, using base 10 equipment, and working collaboratively, children learn to identify relevant information, choose the correct calculation, and find accurate solutions. During the main teaching input , the teacher models how to approach one-step word problems as stories. Pupils practise identifying the calculation needed from the context using key vocabulary, such as “how many left?”, “how many now?” and “further” . Three example word problems are then presented, and the class matches them with the correct calculation and solution, demonstrating that understanding the problem comes before solving it. In the independent activity , pupils are given sheets of word problem stickers to stick into their books. They identify the relevant information, write the appropriate calculation, and solve at least six problems. Base 10 equipment is provided to support pupils, particularly when exchanges are needed. An answer sheet is included for teacher reference or self-checking. The plenary encourages creativity and consolidation.
