While perceptual subitising is recognising small numbers of objects instantly, conceptual subitising is the ability to see larger groups as smaller, structured parts (for example, seeing 6 as “3 and 3” or “2 and 4”). Pupils are encouraged to look at groups of dots or objects, identify smaller patterns within them, and quickly determine the total without counting one by one.
