This Year 4 fractions lesson focuses on subtracting fractions with the same denominator using clear visual representations and a practical, worksheet-free approach . Designed for the Autumn term , the lesson is fully aligned with the KS2 National Curriculum objective: add and subtract fractions with the same denominator . The lesson begins by linking fraction subtraction to subtraction of whole numbers , using familiar representations such as ten frames to activate prior learning. Children then move on to subtracting fractions using bar models, pizza models, and pictorial representations , helping them see that subtracting fractions means removing equal parts from a whole . Through teacher modelling and guided discussion, pupils learn that when subtracting fractions with the same denominator, the denominator stays the same and only the numerators change . Children explore examples where zero parts are subtracted, as well as more challenging representations where multiple parts are crossed out together. Pupils record their learning through cut-and-stick activities , writing the corresponding subtraction calculations and answers. A carefully structured plenary challenges children to identify correct and incorrect calculations, including an introduction to equivalent fractions (e.g. recognising that 5/10 is equivalent to 1/2). This lesson includes key teaching points , assessment opportunities , and common misconceptions to support secure understanding and effective formative assessment. Includes: Detailed lesson plan (Working Without Worksheets) Practical activities for subtracting fractions with the same denominator Visual models including bar models, ten frames, and real-life contexts Cut-and-stick fraction representations Reasoning opportunities and common misconceptions Fully aligned with the Year 4 fractions curriculum
Show lessThe standard small step pack, as her own modules ship it. We do not print page counts here, because her catalogue does not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.
Her own system, with the star count repeated in every worksheet header so a child can be handed the right sheet without a word.
