This Year 4 fractions lesson focuses on finding non-unit fractions of quantities using a practical, worksheet-free approach that builds on pupils’ prior understanding of unit fractions. Designed for the Autumn term , this lesson is fully aligned with the KS2 National Curriculum objective: solving problems involving increasingly harder fractions to calculate quantities . The lesson begins by revisiting the definition of a non-unit fraction (a fraction with a numerator greater than 1) and explicitly explores the roles of the numerator and denominator . Using bar models, sticky dots, and concrete representations , children learn to find non-unit fractions of quantities by dividing by the denominator and then multiplying by the numerator . Through structured questioning and visual modelling, pupils deepen their understanding that non-unit fractions cannot be compared in the same way as unit fractions, and that both the numerator and denominator affect the size of the fraction. Children record their learning by cutting, sticking, and annotating bar models in their maths books, supporting accurate calculation and reasoning. This lesson includes key questions , assessment opportunities , and common misconceptions to support effective teaching and help identify gaps in understanding. The maths is right and the sequence is sensible. Several of my children needed it enlarged to A3, which is easy enough but worth knowing before you print thirty.
