This Year 4 fractions lesson focuses on adding fractions with the same denominator through a practical, worksheet-free approach that develops secure conceptual understanding. Designed for the Autumn term , this lesson is fully aligned with the KS2 National Curriculum objective: add and subtract fractions with the same denominator . The lesson begins by revisiting the roles of the numerator and denominator , helping children understand that when adding fractions, the whole does not change — only the number of equal parts increases. Using visual representations , pupils cut, stick, and interpret fraction models before writing the corresponding addition calculations and answers. Children carefully count equal parts, link pictorial representations to abstract number sentences, and explore cases where one fraction has a numerator of zero . An extension activity encourages pupils to generate their own fraction additions using dice or digit cards, promoting independence and deeper reasoning. This resource includes key questions , assessment opportunities , and common misconceptions to support effective teaching and formative assessment. Animated teaching slides guide whole-class input and modelling, making this an engaging and accessible lesson that strengthens children’s understanding of fraction addition. Includes: Detailed lesson plan (Working Without Worksheets) Practical activities for adding fractions with the same denominator Cut-and-stick fraction representations Key questions to support mathematical reasoning Assessment opportunities and common misconceptions Fully aligned with the Year 4 fractions curriculum
Show lessThe standard small step pack, as her own modules ship it. We do not print page counts here, because her catalogue does not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.
Her own system, with the star count repeated in every worksheet header so a child can be handed the right sheet without a word.

“Good value, and the answers are actually on it.”
Small thing, but half the free sheets online expect you to work the answers out yourself. My TA can run a group on this without a briefing first.

“Fine, though the font is small for my class.”
The maths is right and the sequence is sensible. Several of my children needed it enlarged to A3, which is easy enough but worth knowing before you print thirty.
