About this resource

This Year 3 Autumn term maths lesson provides a complete teaching sequence for helping children subtract numbers mentally, with a focus on subtracting 1s from 2- and 3-digit numbers. Building on prior learning from Year 2 and the previous Year 3 lesson, this resource uses clear modelling, place value discussion, and step-by-step reasoning to support pupils in developing efficient mental subtraction strategies. Animated teaching slides demonstrate how only the ones digit changes when subtracting, unless the calculation crosses a tens boundary. Children explore counting backwards, using known subtraction facts, bridging to the nearest ten, and partitioning to understand subtraction more deeply. The practical activity includes number cards and dice to generate subtraction questions, with optional support using place value counters, number lines, or base 10 resources. Assessment opportunities are embedded through quick-fire starters, partner discussion, observation of strategies, and a reflective plenary task involving common errors. The resource also highlights typical misconceptions—such as misunderstanding place value, ignoring zero as a placeholder, or subtracting from the wrong digit—helping teachers provide targeted support. This lesson is ideal for improving fluency, accuracy, and confidence with mental subtraction in lower Key Stage 2.Read more

The standard small step pack, as her own modules ship it. We do not print page counts here, because her catalogue does not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.

★★★ Differentiated three ways

  • Working withinThe expected standard for the year group.
  • Greater depthReasoning and explaining, not just more of the same.

Her own system, with the star count repeated in every worksheet header so a child can be handed the right sheet without a word.

Matches our White Rose planning almost week for week.

I stopped adapting things from three different sites and now start here. The odd week does not line up exactly, but the small step it covers is always somewhere in the same block.

The editable file is why we renewed.

Being able to change two questions for the child who joined us in January, without rebuilding the whole sheet, is worth the subscription on its own.

Good value, and the answers are actually on it.

Small thing, but half the free sheets online expect you to work the answers out yourself. My TA can run a group on this without a briefing first.
