About this resource

This Year 3 maths lesson provides a complete, structured approach to teaching pupils how to subtract tens from 3-digit numbers mentally. Designed for the Autumn term Addition and Subtraction unit, the lesson builds on prior work with place value and earlier counting-in-10s learning. The teaching sequence begins with counting back in 10s from different starting points, using a hundred square to highlight the pattern: when subtracting 10, the tens digit changes but the ones digit remains the same unless a hundreds boundary is crossed. Clear modelling demonstrates how place value columns change when tens are subtracted, helping children recognise when the hundreds digit will stay the same and when it will reduce. The practical activity uses number cards and base-10 resources so children can subtract tens from a variety of 3-digit numbers before recording their calculations. Differentiation is built in through the optional use of manipulatives such as place value counters, base 10, or number lines. The plenary encourages reasoning and error analysis as students evaluate incorrect answers from example pupils and explain their thinking. Key questions, conceptual prompts, and reflection opportunities support strong understanding of place value and mental fluency with subtracting tens.Read more

The standard small step pack, as her own modules ship it. We do not print page counts here, because her catalogue does not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.

★★★ Differentiated three ways
  • Working towardsScaffolded, with the model or the bar already drawn.
  • Working withinThe expected standard for the year group.
  • Greater depthReasoning and explaining, not just more of the same.

Her own system, with the star count repeated in every worksheet header so a child can be handed the right sheet without a word.

Good value, and the answers are actually on it.

Small thing, but half the free sheets online expect you to work the answers out yourself. My TA can run a group on this without a briefing first.

Fine, though the font is small for my class.

The maths is right and the sequence is sensible. Several of my children needed it enlarged to A3, which is easy enough but worth knowing before you print thirty.

Printed it at eight on a Sunday and taught it on the Monday.

No editing, no reformatting, no hunting for the answers. The three levels are on separate pages, which sounds obvious until you have used the sites where they are not.
