About this resource

Working Without Worksheets – Year 2 Lesson: Count in Steps of 3 Help your Year 2 pupils build confidence with multiples of 3 using this Working Without Worksheets lesson pack. Designed for classrooms where worksheets are not used, this lesson combines practical, hands-on activities with book-based recording to make counting in 3s both accessible and engaging. The lesson begins with a starter recap of previous skip-counting (2s and 5s), then introduces counting in steps of 3 using lolly sticks grouped into threes . Children work practically to create groups and count aloud in 3s, reinforcing the pattern through repeated practice. They then move on to representing their learning by recording multiples of 3 directly into their maths books. A plenary with quick-fire questions checks fluency and reasoning, ensuring pupils are confident in spotting and extending multiples of 3. What’s Included in the Pack? ✔ Full teacher planning with objectives, activities, and plenary guidance ✔ Starter activity: recap counting in 2s and 5s before introducing 3s ✔ Practical task: group lolly sticks into 3s and count aloud ✔ Independent recording: pupils write multiples of 3 directly into their books (no ladder this time) ✔ Plenary: reasoning and quick-fire fluency questions to consolidate learning ✔ Vocabulary focus: multiple, group, odd, even, total ✔ No worksheets—children record directly in their books Why Teachers Love This Resource: ✔ Practical, hands-on lesson using lolly sticks to make multiples concrete ✔ Encourages fluency and pattern recognition in multiples of 3 ✔ No photocopying—fully worksheet-free approach ✔ Supports independence through book-based recording Curriculum Links (Year 2: Number and Place Value): This lesson supports pupils to: ✔ Count in steps of 3 forwards and backwards from 0 ✔ Recognise multiples of 3 and represent them practically and numerically ✔ Develop fluency and reasoning in skip-counting ✔ Record sequences independently in their maths books Whether Read more

The standard small step pack, as her own modules ship it. We do not print page counts here, because her catalogue does not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.

★★★ Differentiated three ways
  • Working towardsScaffolded, with the model or the bar already drawn.
  • Working withinThe expected standard for the year group.
  • Greater depthReasoning and explaining, not just more of the same.

Her own system, with the star count repeated in every worksheet header so a child can be handed the right sheet without a word.

Good value, and the answers are actually on it.

Small thing, but half the free sheets online expect you to work the answers out yourself. My TA can run a group on this without a briefing first.

Fine, though the font is small for my class.

The maths is right and the sequence is sensible. Several of my children needed it enlarged to A3, which is easy enough but worth knowing before you print thirty.

Printed it at eight on a Sunday and taught it on the Monday.

No editing, no reformatting, no hunting for the answers. The three levels are on separate pages, which sounds obvious until you have used the sites where they are not.
