This Year 3 Fractions lesson on dividing by 10 to find tenths supports pupils in developing a secure understanding of how tenths arise through division and place value . Fully aligned with the National Curriculum , this lesson builds on prior learning about tenths, decimals, and number lines and is ideal for Autumn term maths . The lesson begins with a recap of matching fractions and decimals before introducing dividing by 10 using clear, visual models. Animated teaching slides show how whole numbers can be divided into tenths and how digits and counters move one place value column to the right when dividing by 10. Pupils explore examples such as 1 ÷ 10, 2 ÷ 10, 3 ÷ 10, and beyond, reinforcing the idea that ten tenths are equal to one whole and that placeholders (zeros) are sometimes needed when writing decimals. Children then apply their understanding by solving division calculations and recording their thinking in their maths books. Optional use of place value charts and counters provides additional support, while paired reasoning activities encourage discussion and justification of answers. Common misconceptions, such as confusing tenths with tens or misplacing the decimal point, are explicitly addressed. This resource includes: Fully planned lesson structure (starter, main activities, plenary) Animated teaching slides (best viewed in slideshow mode) Clear visual modelling using place value charts Practical, worksheet-light activities suitable for book work National Curriculum links, key questions, assessment opportunities, and common misconceptions Ideal for Year 3 teachers , this lesson strengthens pupils’ understanding of dividing by 10, tenths, and decimal notation through meaningful visual and practical approaches.

Her own system, with the star count repeated in every worksheet header so a child can be handed the right sheet without a word.
