About this resource

Introduce Year 3 pupils to subtracting fractions with the same denominator through this engaging and practical maths lesson designed for the Spring Fractions unit. Using visual representations, diagrams and reasoning activities, children develop confidence in taking away fractions and understanding how fractions function as numbers within a whole. The lesson begins with a recap of prior learning on unit and non-unit fractions, numerators and denominators before exploring how fractions with the same denominator can be subtracted. Through clear teaching examples and visual models, pupils learn that when subtracting fractions with the same denominator, the denominator stays the same while the numerators are subtracted. Children use fraction diagrams, bar models and number lines to represent subtraction calculations and build a secure conceptual understanding of the process. Practical activities encourage pupils to solve fraction subtraction problems, complete missing number questions and explain their reasoning using accurate mathematical vocabulary. Discussion tasks and guided questioning help children identify patterns and deepen their understanding of fraction subtraction. The lesson also addresses common misconceptions, such as incorrectly subtracting both the numerator and denominator or misunderstanding how the whole is represented when working with fractions. Ideal for whole-class teaching, intervention groups and mastery-based maths lessons, this Year 3 fractions resource includes opportunities for assessment, reasoning and collaborative learning. Fully aligned with the UK National Curriculum, the lesson supports pupils in subtracting and understanding fractions with the same denominator using visual and practical methods.Read more

The standard small step pack, as her own modules ship it. We do not print page counts here, because her catalogue does not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.

★★★ Differentiated three ways
  • Working towardsScaffolded, with the model or the bar already drawn.
  • Working withinThe expected standard for the year group.
  • Greater depthReasoning and explaining, not just more of the same.

Her own system, with the star count repeated in every worksheet header so a child can be handed the right sheet without a word.

Matches our White Rose planning almost week for week.

I stopped adapting things from three different sites and now start here. The odd week does not line up exactly, but the small step it covers is always somewhere in the same block.

The editable file is why we renewed.

Being able to change two questions for the child who joined us in January, without rebuilding the whole sheet, is worth the subscription on its own.

Good value, and the answers are actually on it.

Small thing, but half the free sheets online expect you to work the answers out yourself. My TA can run a group on this without a briefing first.
