This engaging Reception End of Unit Assessment: Exploring 3-D Shapes resource provides a practical and interactive way to assess children’s understanding of three-dimensional shapes. Fully aligned with White Rose small steps, this assessment supports pupils in developing early geometry skills through hands-on exploration and mathematical discussion. Designed specifically for Reception, the assessment focuses on recognising, naming and describing 3-D shapes using practical equipment. Children are encouraged to handle and explore real objects and shape models, helping them build secure conceptual understanding rather than relying solely on pictures. Assessment opportunities include: Recognising and naming common 3-D shapes such as cubes, cuboids, spheres, cylinders and cones Describing properties including faces, edges and vertices (in age-appropriate language) Identifying shapes in real-life contexts Comparing 3-D shapes based on their properties Sorting shapes according to different criteria Explaining how they know which shape they have found The resource promotes rich mathematical talk, allowing practitioners to observe vocabulary development, reasoning skills and confidence. Activities are designed to be adult-led and discussion-based, ensuring assessment is low-pressure, practical and engaging. Slides can be printed and laminated for repeated use, making this a durable and cost-effective classroom resource. A blank assessment template is included to record observations, achievements and next steps, supporting effective formative assessment practice. Ideal for Reception teachers, early years practitioners, home educators and intervention groups, this resource provides clear evidence for end-of-unit assessment within the White Rose “Exploring 3-D Shapes” unit. It supports mastery teaching approaches and strengthens children’s spatial awareness and geometric understanding. A practical and child-centred maths assessment tool to build strong foundations in 3-D shape
Show lessThe standard small step pack, as her own modules ship it. We do not print page counts here, because her catalogue does not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.
Her own system, with the star count repeated in every worksheet header so a child can be handed the right sheet without a word.
