Working Without Worksheets – Reception Maths: Rotating Shapes Develop your Reception pupils’ spatial reasoning with this Working Without Worksheets lesson on rotating shapes . Children learn that when shapes are turned, they may look different, but their properties stay the same. Using hands-on pattern block activities, pupils practise rotating shapes to complete pictures while reinforcing shape recognition and vocabulary. The lesson begins with a starter activity : Hold up a 2-D shape in a common orientation. Ask: “What shape is this?” Rotate the shape and ask: “What happens when we rotate the shape?” Model turning the shape and explain that ‘rotate’ means to turn. Emphasise that although the shape looks different, it keeps its properties (e.g. “It still has 3 sides, so it’s still a triangle.” ). In the main input , the teacher models completing a picture using shapes: Show a picture made from 2-D shapes alongside a set of loose shapes. Model fitting the shapes into the picture, demonstrating how to rotate shapes so that they align. Point out how the shapes appear different after rotation but remain the same shape. Reinforce vocabulary such as rotate, turn, sides, corners, triangle, square, rectangle . For the independent activity , children create their own pictures with pattern blocks : Provide examples of shape pictures (e.g. rockets, animals, flowers). Ask children to recreate the pictures using their pattern blocks. Encourage them to rotate the shapes to fit and talk about what they notice. Prompt with questions: “What happens if you turn the shape? How do you know it’s still the same shape?” The plenary consolidates learning: Display children’s pictures and ask them to explain how they rotated the shapes. Reinforce that even if a shape looks different after turning, it keeps the same sides and corners.
