The lesson begins with a starter activity revising place value and division concepts from previous learning. Pupils explore addition and subtraction calculations involving multiples of 10 and discuss why these are easier to calculate mentally. This leads into thinking about which numbers are harder to work with and why. During the main teaching input , children are introduced to the concept of rounding using the number 874 to demonstrate how to round to the nearest 10 and nearest 100. The lesson then shows how rounding can simplify more complex calculations, such as turning 49 + 13 into an easier estimate by rounding 49 to 50. Pupils learn that rounding provides an approximate answer that helps check whether a calculation is sensible . Pupils then apply their understanding in a hands-on independent activity . Using a 9-sided die, they generate six digits and create both a three-digit addition and a three-digit subtraction calculation. Children attempt to estimate the answers mentally before rounding the numbers to the nearest 10 and nearest 100 to produce approximate answers. They then reflect on which rounding strategy was easier and which provided the most accurate estimate. The lesson finishes with a real-life problem-solving plenary involving money , where pupils estimate whether £120 is enough to buy two t-shirts and a pair of trainers. Good value, and the answers are actually on it.

Small thing, but half the free sheets online expect you to work the answers out yourself. My TA can run a group on this without a briefing first.
