Working Without Worksheets – Year 2 Fractions: Finding One Quarter Introduce your Year 2 pupils to fractions with this Working Without Worksheets lesson on finding one quarter . Building on prior knowledge of halves, children learn how to recognise and find quarters of shapes, lengths, and quantities through practical, hands-on activities. The lesson begins with a starter activity : Recap multiplication, division, and addition and subtraction to activate prior knowledge. Revisit halves using animated slides, showing halves of shapes, objects, lengths, and quantities. Emphasise that a half means 2 equal parts of a whole (e.g. half of 6 is 3 ). Children practise completing the sentence: “Half of ___ is ___” on whiteboards. In the main input , children are introduced to fractions as notation : Show that one half can be written as 1/2 and explain what the numerator and denominator mean. Move on to quarters and ask if anyone can write 1/4 . Show shapes divided into 4 equal parts and link this to the idea of a quarter. Work through a quantity example: “A chocolate bar has 12 pieces. One quarter is 3.” Explain that a quarter can also be thought of as half of a half . Practise completing sentences: “1/4 of ___ is ___.” For the independent activities , children work in two groups and complete both tasks, swapping halfway through: Paper Strip Task – find a quarter of a strip of paper by folding into 4 equal parts or, for greater challenge, measuring using a ruler. Stick the strip into maths books, showing how a quarter was found. Counter Pots Task – each pot contains a number of counters that can be divided equally into 4 groups. Children share the counters, recording their findings as: “1/4 of ___ is ___.” The plenary brings children back together: Share strategies for finding quarters.
