Develop children’s understanding of non-unit fractions with this engaging Year 3 maths lesson designed for the Spring Fractions unit. Through practical activities, number line exploration and mathematical discussion, pupils learn how non-unit fractions are built from repeated unit fractions and how they can be represented as numbers. The lesson begins with a recap of prior learning on fractions and multiplication and division before revisiting the meaning of numerators and denominators. Using visual models and clear teaching slides, children practise identifying and writing fractions before exploring how fractions such as three quarters can be understood as repeated unit fractions. Pupils count fractions along number lines, complete sentence stems, compare fractions and identify larger values by considering their positions on a number line. They also explore fraction number sentences and use repeated addition to represent non-unit fractions, helping to strengthen conceptual understanding and mathematical fluency. Practical activities encourage children to work independently and explain their reasoning as they match fraction images, write fractions, represent repeated addition and draw number lines to show fraction positions. The lesson also includes opportunities to identify and correct common misconceptions, such as confusing numerators and denominators or viewing fractions only as parts of shapes rather than numbers. This Year 3 fractions resource is ideal for whole-class teaching, intervention sessions and mastery-based maths lessons. It includes assessment opportunities, key questions and misconception guidance to support effective teaching and progression. Fully aligned with the UK National Curriculum objective of recognising and using unit and non-unit fractions with small denominators.
Show lessThe standard small step pack, as her own modules ship it. We do not print page counts here, because her catalogue does not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.
Her own system, with the star count repeated in every worksheet header so a child can be handed the right sheet without a word.
