Year 1 Summer Term Place Value – Lesson 5: Use the Language of Equal to, More Than, Less Than (Fewer), Most, Least within 100 In this Working Without Worksheets lesson, Year 1 children build on their place value understanding to compare and order numbers within 100 using the language of comparison. Starting with a hands-on hundred square activity, pupils practise recognising when numbers are greater, smaller, equal to, most or least. The lesson carefully models how to compare two-digit numbers by focusing first on tens, then on ones when tens are equal. Children then apply this understanding in an engaging dice-rolling activity, predicting and recording whether their next number will be greater or smaller, and finishing with a fun plenary game of Play Your Cards Right . What’s Included in the Pack? ✔ Full lesson plan with objectives, teaching notes, and plenary guidance ✔ Animated teaching slides modelling number comparison and ordering ✔ Starter: Hundred square counter challenge – finding numbers greater or less than given values ✔ Teaching input: Comparing and ordering two-digit numbers using tens and ones ✔ Group activity: Roll dice to generate numbers, predict and test greater/less outcomes ✔ Plenary: Play Your Cards Right – whole-class game consolidating comparison vocabulary ✔ Hands-on, practical, and completely worksheet-free Why Teachers Love This Resource ✔ Builds confidence with the key comparison vocabulary: equal to, more than, less than/fewer, most, least ✔ Provides practical, interactive activities that bring abstract number concepts to life ✔ Encourages reasoning through predictions and testing outcomes ✔ Fun, game-based plenary makes learning memorable ✔ Fully aligned with Year 1 mastery curriculum and Working Without Worksheets pedagogy Curriculum Links (Year 1 Number and Place Value, National Curriculum) This lesson helps children to: ✔ Use the language of equal to, more than, less than (fewer), most and least ✔ Compare and order numbers up to 100
Show lessThe standard small step pack, as her own modules ship it. We do not print page counts here, because her catalogue does not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.
Her own system, with the star count repeated in every worksheet header so a child can be handed the right sheet without a word.

“Good value, and the answers are actually on it.”
Small thing, but half the free sheets online expect you to work the answers out yourself. My TA can run a group on this without a briefing first.

“Fine, though the font is small for my class.”
The maths is right and the sequence is sensible. Several of my children needed it enlarged to A3, which is easy enough but worth knowing before you print thirty.
