About this resource

This engaging Year 3 maths lesson focuses on adding and subtracting masses in grams (g) and kilograms (kg) through practical, hands-on learning rather than worksheets. Pupils explore real-life contexts where mass needs to be combined or reduced, using balance scales, measuring equipment and classroom objects to support their understanding. Children build fluency in working with standard units of mass and develop confidence in calculating with grams and kilograms. They investigate problems such as combining the mass of two objects, finding the difference between items, and solving simple real-world word problems involving mass. Through practical activities, pupils are encouraged to estimate first, measure accurately, and then record and explain their reasoning using appropriate mathematical vocabulary. This supports deeper understanding of when to add or subtract masses and helps children check whether their answers are reasonable. The lesson promotes active, collaborative learning and reduces reliance on worksheets by focusing on hands-on exploration and discussion. Pupils develop both their mathematical reasoning and practical measuring skills, making meaningful connections between classroom learning and everyday life. Designed to support mastery of the Year 3 curriculum, this lesson builds confidence, problem-solving ability and secure understanding of adding and subtracting mass in grams and kilograms.Read more

The standard small step pack, as her own modules ship it. We do not print page counts here, because her catalogue does not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.

★★★ Differentiated three ways
  • Working towardsScaffolded, with the model or the bar already drawn.
  • Working withinThe expected standard for the year group.
  • Greater depthReasoning and explaining, not just more of the same.

Her own system, with the star count repeated in every worksheet header so a child can be handed the right sheet without a word.

Good value, and the answers are actually on it.

Small thing, but half the free sheets online expect you to work the answers out yourself. My TA can run a group on this without a briefing first.

Fine, though the font is small for my class.

The maths is right and the sequence is sensible. Several of my children needed it enlarged to A3, which is easy enough but worth knowing before you print thirty.

Printed it at eight on a Sunday and taught it on the Monday.

No editing, no reformatting, no hunting for the answers. The three levels are on separate pages, which sounds obvious until you have used the sites where they are not.
