Working Without Worksheets – Year 2 Lesson 8: Order Numbers Support your pupils in mastering the skill of ordering numbers with this Working Without Worksheets lesson for Year 2 Place Value. Instead of worksheets, children use practical resources, reasoning questions, and direct book recording to order 2-digit numbers from smallest to greatest and from greatest to smallest, while also applying the inequality symbols < and >. The lesson begins with a starter recap, reviewing how to compare two numbers using tens and ones. Pupils then move on to ordering sets of three or more numbers, using digit cards, base ten, and number lines to support their reasoning. Teacher modelling introduces how to use the inequality symbols in a chain (e.g. 23 < 45 < 67). For independent work, children select digit cards to create sets of 2-digit numbers, order them correctly, and record their number sentences directly into their maths books. The plenary consolidates reasoning with true/false statements and “spot the mistake” tasks. What’s Included in the Pack? ✔ Full teacher planning with objectives, activities, and plenary guidance ✔ Starter: recap comparing two numbers with <, >, and = ✔ Vocabulary focus: order, greatest, smallest, less than, more than, equal to ✔ Practical task: order sets of numbers using digit cards, base ten, and number lines ✔ Teacher modelling: build inequality chains (e.g. 14 < 32 < 46) ✔ Independent activity: record ordered number sentences in books ✔ Plenary: reasoning with true/false questions and misconceptions ✔ No worksheets—children record directly in their books Why Teachers Love This Resource: ✔ Builds fluency in ordering numbers beyond simple comparisons ✔ Hands-on and visual, using digit cards, base ten, and number lines ✔ Extends understanding of inequality symbols in chains ✔ Encourages independence and good presentation with book recording ✔ Saves prep time with ready-made slides and teacher notes Curriculum Links (Year 2: Number and Place Value): T
