About this resource

Year 6: Fractions: Lesson 14 – Multiply Fractions by Fractions Build pupils’ fraction fluency with this curriculum-aligned Year 6 lesson centred on multiplying fractions by other fractions . The resource aligns with the National Curriculum’s expectation for Year 6 learners to multiply simple pairs of proper fractions and to write answers in their simplest form (for example, ¼ × ½ = ⅛). Pupils will: Multiply proper fractions—such as ⅖ × ⅗—by multiplying numerators and denominators directly. Apply simplification strategies, including cancellation of common factors before or after multiplication. Challenge and strengthen mathematical reasoning through tasks such as: Explaining why (a × c)/(b × d) gives the product of two fractions, or Simplifying (⅔ × ¾) by cancelling common factors pre-multiplication. Develop independence through differentiated worksheets and reasoning prompts (as typical in the Year 6 fractions sequence, including equivalent operations such as Lesson 13: Multiply by Integers, and Lesson 15: Divide by Integers). Ideal for guided lessons, consolidation sessions, or independent fluency work, this lesson ensures pupils master the mechanics of fraction multiplication with confidence and understanding.Read more

The standard small step pack, as her own modules ship it. We do not print page counts here, because her catalogue does not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.

★★★ Differentiated three ways
  • Working towardsScaffolded, with the model or the bar already drawn.
  • Working withinThe expected standard for the year group.
  • Greater depthReasoning and explaining, not just more of the same.

Her own system, with the star count repeated in every worksheet header so a child can be handed the right sheet without a word.
