Working Without Worksheets – Year 2 Multiplication & Division: Solve Problems Using Materials Introduce your Year 2 pupils to multiplication and division with this Working Without Worksheets lesson, where children solve real-life problems using practical materials such as counters . Instead of worksheets, pupils explore repeated addition, grouping, and sharing through hands-on activities and independent recording in their maths books. The lesson begins with a recap starter , including: 2 times-table facts (multiplication and division) Number bonds to 100 for fluency Odd and even number recognition Children are then introduced to multiplication as repeated addition and division as equal sharing/grouping . Teacher modelling shows simple problems such as: There are 3 trees and each tree has 6 apples. How many apples altogether? You have 16 cookies to share equally between 4 friends. How many cookies does each friend get? Using counters and drawn circles , pupils work step by step to represent groups, share equally, and count totals. They practise writing the matching multiplication or division sentence (e.g. 6 × 3 = 18 , 16 ÷ 4 = 4 ). The independent activity allows children to work with a partner to solve further multiplication and division problems using counters. Questions include sharing balloons equally, counting cookies on plates, sharing lollipops between friends, and counting apples on trees. Pupils record their answers and number sentences directly in their books. The plenary focuses on reasoning: “There are 3 boxes of toys. Each box has 4 cars. Esin says there are 7 cars altogether.” Children discuss why this is incorrect, showing that multiplication is not the same as addition. What’s Included in the Pack? ✔ Full teacher planning with clear objectives and plenary guidance ✔ Starter: 2 times-tables, number bonds to 100, odd/even sorting ✔ Vocabulary focus: multiplication, repeated addition, division, share, group, equal ✔ Teacher modelling: solving real-life
Show lessThe standard small step pack, as her own modules ship it. We do not print page counts here, because her catalogue does not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.
Her own system, with the star count repeated in every worksheet header so a child can be handed the right sheet without a word.
