Working Without Worksheets – Year 2 Multiplication & Division: Using Multiplication and Division Facts Help your Year 2 pupils strengthen their fluency with this Working Without Worksheets lesson, where children learn to use multiplication and division facts to solve problems . With a focus on the inverse relationship between multiplication and division, this lesson encourages children to connect facts, use counters for problem solving, and record their answers independently in maths books. The lesson begins with a recap starter , including: Place value practice (tens and ones) Completing division sentences (e.g. 15 ÷ 5, 18 ÷ 2) Spotting even and odd numbers The starter activity is a quick-fire recall game: Flash facts with multiplication and division questions (e.g. What is 2 × 4? , How many 4s in 12? ) Children also play Flash Facts , calling out multiplication or division facts linked to the number shown. In the main teaching , the teacher models how multiplication and division facts are linked: 2 × 4 = 8 → 8 ÷ 4 = 2 5 × 3 = 15 → 15 ÷ 3 = 5 Children explore this with counters, using the inverse relationship to solve both multiplication and division problems. The independent activity allows pupils to work in pairs with counters to solve real-world problems, such as: There are 3 boxes with 4 pencils in each. How many pencils altogether? 24 sweets are shared between 6 friends. How many does each get? There are 6 bags with 5 marbles in each. How many marbles altogether? Children record their answers in maths books using both multiplication and division sentences. The plenary consolidates understanding with inverse reasoning: If we know 4 × 3 = 12 , then 12 ÷ 3 = 4 If we know 6 × 4 = 24 , then 24 ÷ 4 = 6 Pupils are challenged to explain how multiplication can always help solve a division problem.
