Working Without Worksheets – Year 2 Multiplication & Division: Solve Problems Using Repeated Addition Support your Year 2 pupils in understanding multiplication and division with this Working Without Worksheets lesson, where children learn to use repeated addition and subtraction to solve problems . This lesson builds on previous work with arrays and grouping, showing pupils how multiplication and division can be represented as repeated operations. The lesson begins with a recap starter , including: Drawing arrays to represent multiplication facts Completing 10 times-table facts for fluency Creating a number fact family to show multiplication and division links Teacher modelling introduces repeated addition for multiplication, e.g. 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12 to show 4 × 3 = 12 , and repeated subtraction for division, e.g. 12 – 3 – 3 – 3 – 3 = 0 to show 12 ÷ 3 = 4 . Children see how these methods connect to arrays and to equal groups. The main activity allows pupils to solve multiplication and division problems using repeated addition and subtraction with counters or pictures. Examples include: There are 5 baskets with 2 apples in each. How many apples are there in total? 12 sweets are shared into groups of 3. How many groups are there? Children record their working as number sentences (both repeated addition/subtraction and multiplication/division) directly in their books. The independent task extends this by giving pupils real-world problems to solve with repeated operations. They practise reasoning about which strategy to use (addition or subtraction) and check their answers by linking the two operations. The plenary addresses misconceptions with a reasoning problem: “Ali says 3 + 3 + 3 = 12. Do you agree? Why?” Pupils explain why accuracy in repeated addition matters when solving multiplication.
