Working Without Worksheets – Year 1 Lesson: Mathematical Statements Introduce children to mathematical statements with this interactive Working Without Worksheets lesson for Year 1 Addition and Subtraction. Perfect for classrooms that avoid worksheets, this pack uses practical activities, visual models, and independent recording to help pupils read, write, and interpret simple number sentences with confidence. The lesson begins with a starter recap using everyday objects such as fruit to model addition. Pupils learn to build and interpret number sentences, using the addition (+), subtraction (–), and equals (=) symbols correctly. Through guided examples, children see how each number in a calculation represents a group or total. In practical tasks, pupils use number cards and counters to create their own addition sentences, recording them independently in maths books. The plenary consolidates learning with missing number challenges, encouraging children to apply their understanding and develop fluency with mathematical symbols. What’s Included in the Pack? ✔ Full teacher planning with objectives, activities, and plenary guidance ✔ Starter: model addition with fruit and count groups together ✔ Vocabulary focus: add, subtract, equals, altogether, total ✔ Practical task: use counters and number cards to create number sentences ✔ Independent activity: record addition and subtraction statements in books ✔ Plenary: missing number challenges to reinforce fluency ✔ No worksheets—children record directly in their books Why Teachers Love This Resource: ✔ Clear introduction to mathematical symbols and number sentences ✔ Builds confidence in writing and interpreting calculations ✔ Fully aligned with the Year 1 National Curriculum for maths ✔ Worksheet-free: encourages independence and neat recording in books ✔ Fun, practical activities that make abstract concepts accessible Curriculum Links (Year 1: Addition and Subtraction): This lesson supports pupils to: ✔ Read, write, and in

Her own system, with the star count repeated in every worksheet header so a child can be handed the right sheet without a word.

“Fine, though the font is small for my class.”
The maths is right and the sequence is sensible. Several of my children needed it enlarged to A3, which is easy enough but worth knowing before you print thirty.

“Printed it at eight on a Sunday and taught it on the Monday.”
No editing, no reformatting, no hunting for the answers. The three levels are on separate pages, which sounds obvious until you have used the sites where they are not.
