About this resource

This Year 3 maths resource is a carefully structured lesson designed to help students compare and reason about fractions . Beginning with a recap of prior learning from Year 3 units and the Year 2 summer term, the lesson reinforces the meaning of numerators and denominators and how they affect the size of fractions. Children engage in hands-on activities by drawing counters, circling fractions of sets, and discussing which fractions are greater and why. The lesson progresses to practical exercises where students compare fractions of sets using visual models, counters, and whiteboard drawings , recording their answers with greater than (>) and less than (<) symbols. Through guided discussion and partner work, children develop their reasoning skills and learn to explain their thinking using sentence stems like “_____ is greater than _____ because…”. The plenary encourages active participation and consolidates learning through a true or false activity , reinforcing understanding and addressing common misconceptions such as confusing numerators and denominators, misinterpreting larger denominators, or failing to divide sets into equal parts. Perfect for teachers seeking an engaging, interactive, and concept-focused Year 3 fractions lesson , this resource builds confidence and fluency in comparing fractions while encouraging mathematical discussion and reasoning.Read more

The standard small step pack, as her own modules ship it. We do not print page counts here, because her catalogue does not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.

★★★ Differentiated three ways
  • Working towardsScaffolded, with the model or the bar already drawn.
  • Working withinThe expected standard for the year group.
  • Greater depthReasoning and explaining, not just more of the same.

Her own system, with the star count repeated in every worksheet header so a child can be handed the right sheet without a word.

Matches our White Rose planning almost week for week.

I stopped adapting things from three different sites and now start here. The odd week does not line up exactly, but the small step it covers is always somewhere in the same block.

The editable file is why we renewed.

Being able to change two questions for the child who joined us in January, without rebuilding the whole sheet, is worth the subscription on its own.

Good value, and the answers are actually on it.

Small thing, but half the free sheets online expect you to work the answers out yourself. My TA can run a group on this without a briefing first.
