About this resource

This Year 3 fractions problem-solving resource is designed to help children apply their understanding of fractions of amounts and sets in meaningful, real-life contexts. Building on prior learning from earlier Year 3 lessons and the Year 2 summer term, this lesson supports children in using fractions to solve multi-step word problems with confidence. The lesson begins with a recap of finding fractions of sets of objects, ensuring children are secure in key concepts before moving into problem solving. Through carefully modelled examples, pupils learn how to use bar models to represent fractions, divide by the denominator to find the value of one part, and apply this understanding to real-world scenarios involving money and quantities . Children are guided through problems that require them to calculate non-unit fractions , combine fractional amounts, and subtract to find remaining quantities. Visual support is provided throughout, and children are encouraged to use objects, drawings, and whiteboards to support their thinking. The independent activity allows pupils to solve fraction word problems using sticker tasks, recording their methods and answers in their maths books. The plenary promotes deeper thinking by challenging children to find multiple solutions , encouraging discussion, reasoning, and explanation of different strategies. This resource also explicitly addresses common misconceptions , such as confusing numerators and denominators, dividing by the wrong number, or missing key steps in multi-step problems. It is ideal for teachers looking for an engaging Year 3 fractions reasoning and problem-solving lesson that develops fluency, reasoning, and confidence.Read more

The standard small step pack, as her own modules ship it. We do not print page counts here, because her catalogue does not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.

★★★ Differentiated three ways
  • Working towardsScaffolded, with the model or the bar already drawn.
  • Working withinThe expected standard for the year group.
  • Greater depthReasoning and explaining, not just more of the same.

Her own system, with the star count repeated in every worksheet header so a child can be handed the right sheet without a word.
