About this resource

Help your Year 2 pupils develop confidence and accuracy in subtraction with this Maths Resource Pack, focusing on solving problems using both mental and written methods. Fully aligned with the National Curriculum, this resource equips children with a toolkit of subtraction strategies so they can select the most efficient method for different problems. Through clear teaching slides, worked examples, and guided practice, pupils explore mental strategies such as counting back, using number bonds, and partitioning, alongside written methods including number lines and column subtraction. Real-life contexts are included to make subtraction meaningful and engaging. Independent activities encourage children to choose strategies independently, explain their reasoning, and check their answers systematically. The plenary recap allows pupils to reflect on which method worked best for different problems, strengthening both fluency and reasoning. What’s Included in the Pack? ✔ Teaching slides introducing mental and written subtraction strategies ✔ Step-by-step worked examples with clear explanations ✔ Differentiated practice tasks for varied abilities ✔ Real-life subtraction problems involving numbers, quantities, and measures ✔ Independent activities encouraging method selection and reasoning ✔ A plenary recap to consolidate strategies and reflect on learning Why Teachers Love This Pack: ✔ Meets Year 2 National Curriculum requirements for subtraction ✔ Differentiated and adaptable for whole-class, groups, or individuals ✔ Combines fluency practice with reasoning and problem-solving ✔ Low-prep and versatile—perfect for lessons, interventions, or SATs prep Curriculum Links: This pack supports the Year 2 National Curriculum for Mathematics by helping pupils: ✔ Solve subtraction problems using mental and written strategies ✔ Apply knowledge of number bonds, place value, and subtraction facts ✔ Explain and compare methods, evaluating efficiency and accuracy Whether you’re introducingRead more

The standard small step pack, as her own modules ship it. We do not print page counts here, because her catalogue does not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.

★★★ Differentiated three ways
  • Working towardsScaffolded, with the model or the bar already drawn.
  • Working withinThe expected standard for the year group.
  • Greater depthReasoning and explaining, not just more of the same.

Her own system, with the star count repeated in every worksheet header so a child can be handed the right sheet without a word.

Fine, though the font is small for my class.

The maths is right and the sequence is sensible. Several of my children needed it enlarged to A3, which is easy enough but worth knowing before you print thirty.

Printed it at eight on a Sunday and taught it on the Monday.

No editing, no reformatting, no hunting for the answers. The three levels are on separate pages, which sounds obvious until you have used the sites where they are not.

Matches our White Rose planning almost week for week.

I stopped adapting things from three different sites and now start here. The odd week does not line up exactly, but the small step it covers is always somewhere in the same block.
