Support your Year 1 pupils as they move from non-standard units to standard measurement in this practical Working Without Worksheets lesson on using a ruler to measure length in centimetres (cm) . Children explore how to use a ruler accurately, understanding why we always start from zero and how each centimetre mark represents one equal unit. Through clear teacher modelling and hands-on practice, pupils learn how to measure familiar classroom objects such as pencils, books, and toys with confidence. Animated teaching slides guide children through each step of ruler use, highlighting common misconceptions such as starting at the ruler’s edge instead of the zero line. The interactive structure encourages prediction, measurement, comparison, and reasoning, developing mathematical fluency and precision in early measurement skills. This engaging, low-prep lesson helps children make the essential transition from estimating and comparing length to recording accurate measurements — a key Year 1 mastery objective. Show lessThe standard small step pack, as her own modules ship it. We do not print page counts here, because her catalogue does not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.
Her own system, with the star count repeated in every worksheet header so a child can be handed the right sheet without a word.

“Good value, and the answers are actually on it.”
Small thing, but half the free sheets online expect you to work the answers out yourself. My TA can run a group on this without a briefing first.

“Fine, though the font is small for my class.”
The maths is right and the sequence is sensible. Several of my children needed it enlarged to A3, which is easy enough but worth knowing before you print thirty.
